Susan Rutter
A few words from Susan...
Hello, I’m Susan!
I’m a drum kit, percussion and piano teacher.
I enjoy playing classical/orchestral, funk/soul, jazz and pop music in particular, but I’m also up for a bit of anything. The world of percussion always requires you to be open-minded… Nothing I enjoy more than running around the back of an orchestra adding the finishing touches!
I’ve been performing for almost 10 years on drum kit, percussion and piano. I love working with different ensembles — orchestras, worship bands, pit bands, choirs, jazz groups are a few examples. My varied background as a performer allows me to introduce students to musicianship and develop their performing skills – away from the books and onto the stage!
Doing a Masters in Music Education at the University of York has really prepared me for teaching, after completing a BA in Music too. I’ve now been teaching for 6 years. I focus greatly on the student-teacher relationship, because very little learning can take place without a good connection! I aim to make lessons fun, varied and reflective.
I enjoy using some of the Trinity Rock & Pop syllabus because it uses familiar popular songs, which is usually a great motivation to getting started. (And who wouldn’t want to play along to Billie Jean?!)
